How to get there

South Gate by metro and shuttle

Take Metro Line 3 to Panda Avenue Station, leave from Exit A and transfer to shuttle bus 408 for the South Gate. Another official option is Metro Line 3 to Chengdu Zoo Station, then bus 655 or 87.

West Gate by metro and shuttle

Take Metro Line 3 to Chengdu Junqu General Hospital Station, Exit B, then use shuttle bus 409 to the West Gate. The official route page also lists local bus alternatives followed by a walk.

Taxi or DiDi

Specify the gate as well as the attraction name. The official route page estimates CNY 40 and 25–35 minutes from Chunxi Road, but traffic can change both figures.

Direct tourism bus

Official sightseeing connections may operate from central visitor areas including Chunxi Road and Kuanzhai Alley. Check the “Chengdu Scenic Shuttle Bus” mini-program or Chengdu Public Transport channels for the current route.

South Gate or West Gate?

Both gates have tourist centres and access to the internal network. Choose primarily by the route you want to follow and the transport connection that works best that day.

Check the official panoramic guide map before committing to a gate, because animal displays, facility access and walking routes can change.

How long to allow

Reserve at least half a day. The official introduction states that the core area covers about 238 hectares, so the Base is much larger than a single zoo enclosure. Build time for walking, queues, animal rest periods and the museum.

A practical half-day route

1. Arrive early and check the official map. Note any closures or rotational rest notices.
2. Prioritise giant-panda habitats. Cooler morning conditions are generally better for visitor comfort and observation.
3. Add a nursery area if open. Viewing depends on animal welfare and current operations.
4. Visit the red-panda area. Red pandas are a separate species and one of the Base’s important conservation subjects.
5. Finish with the Chengdu Giant Panda Museum. Allow time for conservation, biology and breeding exhibits.

Internal sightseeing bus

The official sightseeing-bus ticket is currently CNY 30 per person for visitors over 1.3 m, with free rides for eligible small children under the stated conditions. It can be useful for visitors with limited walking tolerance. Service hours also follow the March–October and November–February seasons.

Animal welfare and visitor etiquette

• Do not feed, touch or disturb animals.
• Do not tap on glass, shout or use flash photography.
• Follow staff instructions, barriers and any rotational-rest notices.
• Expect that some pandas may be indoors, resting or temporarily off display.

Visitor facilities

Both South and West Gate tourist centres offer information, free luggage storage and selected convenience equipment such as strollers, wheelchairs and umbrellas. The Base also lists drinking-water points and on-site medical stations. Availability should be confirmed when you arrive.
