Chengdu Weather: Month-by-Month Guide for Visitors
Climate averages help you choose a season; they are not a forecast. Check live weather and official warnings again shortly before travel.
Chengdu weather in short
Chengdu has a humid, monsoon-influenced subtropical climate. Winters are cool and damp, while summers are hot, humid and much wetter. Spring and autumn are generally the easiest seasons for city walking and regional day trips, but public-holiday crowds can matter as much as the weather.

The table uses 1991–2020 climate normals for the Chengdu Shuangliu station. “Rain days” means days with at least 0.1 mm of precipitation; figures describe long-term averages, not what will happen on a particular trip.

What to pack by season
Spring
Light jacket, layers, compact umbrella and comfortable walking shoes.
Summer
Breathable clothes, reliable rain protection, sun protection and quick-drying footwear.
Autumn
Light layers with a mid-weight jacket for cooler evenings.
Winter
Warm coat, scarf and removable layers for cool, damp conditions.
Weather and trip planning
Panda Base visits

Mountain and plateau routes
Jiuzhaigou, Mount Emei and western Sichuan have different elevation and weather risks. Do not use a Chengdu city forecast as the only source for mountain or Sichuan–Tibet travel.
Public holidays
Weather alone does not determine the best dates. National Day, Lunar New Year and other holiday periods can create heavy demand and crowding even when conditions are comfortable.

When is the best time to visit Chengdu?
Spring and autumn usually offer the easiest conditions for walking and day trips. The best dates still depend on rain tolerance, holiday crowds and any higher-elevation destinations.
Does it rain a lot in Chengdu?
Rain falls year-round, but the climate normals show that most precipitation is concentrated from June through September, especially July and August.
How hot does Chengdu get in summer?
Average daily highs are about 31°C in July and August at the Shuangliu station. High humidity can make conditions feel warmer.
Does it snow in central Chengdu?
Snow is uncommon in the city. Winter snow is more likely in higher mountain destinations, where separate forecasts and access checks are essential.
Is Chengdu always cloudy?
The Sichuan Basin is known for frequent cloud and relatively limited sunshine, especially in the cooler part of the year. Build flexibility into photography and mountain-view plans.
What about air quality?
Conditions vary from day to day and season to season. Check a current official air-quality reading before outdoor-heavy plans rather than relying on a yearly generalisation.
